Effort Is Good, But...
How many times have you worked hard for something you wanted and gotten
nowhere? We can believe we're moving forward, when in fact, we are sometimes
slipping backwards.
The purest definition of success I have heard so far comes from Earl
Nightingale, author, speaker and motivational expert, who said, "Success
is the progressive realization of a worthy ideal."
In saying "progressive" Mr. Nightingale meant that there must
be continual movement. Success is never a destination, it is the journey.
He said "realization" because we need to know that we are moving
forward. At times that's difficult to see. The journey to where we want
to be is never a straight line and nothing unfolds exactly as planned.
And in saying "worthy" Mr. Nightingale meant something we can
be proud of. This is in line with something another speaker, Zig Zigler,
said, "If you help enough other people get what they want, life will
return to you more than enough of what you want."
Service before self is not new. It is a very old idea that separates
the truly happy from the marginally displeased. A truly happy person knows
that they have made life better for someone else and that knowledge results
in warm feelings. On the other hand, someone focused only on what they
can get for themselves may get much - - but in spite of all that they
have gotten, the end result is cold empty feelings.
Service before self is in harmony with a universal truth, the law of
service and reward. If we hope to enjoy the rewards we must be willing
to pay the price. And the price is - - service to others.
As you go about each day, think in terms of helping others. When dealing
with anyone in person or over the phone, ask yourself, "How can I
help this person? What can I do to make a difference in their life?"
A smile or a kind word or two, makes a difference.
Effort is good, but service is better.
